UMass basketball: Minutewomen's season comes to an end with 81-57 loss to Duquesne in Atlantic 10 tourney second round

After an opening-round victory over La Salle on Wednesday, the UMass women’s basketball team was unable to keep its Atlantic 10 Tournament run going on Thursday.

The 13th-seeded Minutewomen fell into a double-digit deficit after the first quarter and were unable to climb back in an 81-57 second-round loss to No. 5 Duquesne in Henrico, Va.

UMass finished its season 5-27 overall. Duquesne advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal round and a matchup with No. 4 George Mason at 1:30 p.m.

Duquesne held a 44-29 edge in rebounding and limited the Minutewomen to just 39 percent shooting from the floor.

Kristin Williams and Stefanie Kulesza led UMass with 11 points apiece, while Alexsia Rose followed with nine points and Tori Hyduke added seven points.

Duquesne (19-11) led 21-10 after one quarter and 39-26 at halftime. Megan McConnell paced the Dukes with 21 points.

Northampton will play Westfield on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. at Chicopee High School.

Abby Wu went for 13 points and five rebounds in the win, while Northampton also received key contributions from Zora Nteta (6 points, 10 rebounds), Kate Wozniak (5 points, 5 rebounds), Quinn Spears (4 points, 7 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 steals) and A’Nylah Johnston (4 points, 2 rebounds).
