A combination of less time in the home plus COVID-19 restrictions being lifted likely contributed to Floridians drinking less in 2021.

A study featuring 6,370 drinkers across America found the average drinker consumes 13 “standard-sized” drinks per week, according to DrugAbuse.com.

At 652 drinks, Florida residents consumed 20% less alcohol compared to 2020. Floridians ranked just outside the top 20 for the biggest change, according to the study.

Standard-sized drinks are 5 ounces of wine with 12% alcohol, 12 ounces of beer with 5% alcohol, and 1.5 ounces of liquor like whiskey, vodka, and gin with 40% alcohol.

A 2020 study, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, found Americans drank 859 standard-size drinks per average drinker. DrugAbuse.com purports the changing circumstances of the pandemic, people returning to work, and spending far less time are the catalysts.

The study also cited people returning to a routine might have improved their mental health, making them less likely to numb their feelings with liquor.

Across the country, New Mexico residents drank the most alcohol in 2021, with an average of 15 drinks per week, according to the study.

South Dakota residents drank the least at 10 drinks per week.

In 2020, Alaskans drank the most at just over 1,400 drinks per year. New Hampshire and Hawaii tied for the least drinks at 520 per person.
