ALAMEDA — A Los Angeles man drowned Friday while swimming off Encinal Beach, authorities said.

He was identified Saturday by the coroner’s office as Jonathan Santiesteban Leon, 32. Authorities said he was swimming and apparently suffered some difficulties, causing him to go underwater.

The beach is near Ballena Boulevard and Tideway Drive on the shore of San Francisco Bay.

An Alameda police officer trained in water rescue who was one of the first to respond  went into the water but could not rescue him, authorities said.

Alameda firefighters also responded and deployed  rescue swimmers and its Sub-service Dive Rescue Team but could not immediately find the man, authorities said.

Firefighters eventually recovered Santiesteban Leon’s body underwater about 6:53 p.m. Friday, authorities said.  He brought ashore and pronounced dead at the scene.

The drowning is being investigated by Alameda police and the coroner’s office.

His family has organized a GoFundMe.
