New Englanders longing for an epic summer getaway on the water needn’t travel far.

Reader’s Digest recently released a list of America’s most scenic small-ship and river cruises and included the sailing yacht Arabella and the schooner Lewis R. French.

“Looking for a cruise a bit closer to home? These American river cruises offer opportunities on tributaries, bays, lakes, and other waterways to explore a part of the country you might otherwise miss,” wrote Reader’s Digest.

Travelers can enjoy the spectacular scenery of Newport, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard this summer aboard the Arabella, a 157-foot mega-yacht with 20 staterooms.

Guests set sail from Newport and “travel to the area’s loveliest beaches under billowing white sails,” wrote Reader’s Digest.

If exploring coastal Maine is your aim, the Maine Windjammer Association’s 20-passenger Lewis R. French is well worth the trip, according to Reader’s Digest.

“The schooner, which dates back to 1871 and is a National Historic Landmark, has no engine, and powers through Penobscot Bay just with the wind in its sails. You can help out with the sails, and watch for porpoises and eagles,” wrote the publication.
