A Massachusetts coastal town named one of the best places to live is also a great place for eating and exploring, according to Yankee magazine.

Marblehead, located 17 miles north of Boston, was one of two Massachusetts destinations on the magazine’s 2024 list of best places to live in New England, and editors also provided picks for what to eat, see, and do there. The other Massachusetts town on the list is Great Barrington in the Berkshires.

The seaside town of Marblehead is an excellent place for sailing, wrote the publication, and folks can learn through private sailing schools or with the Marblehead Recreation, Parks, and Forestry Department.

For those who’d rather remain on dry land, climbing the stairway to Old Burial Hill offers “stunning” views of the harbor, wrote the publication. Established in 1638, Old Burial Hill is billed as one of the most picturesque graveyards in New England.

During the cold months, the frozen Redd’s Pond offers ice skating and pick-up hockey.

And when all that adventuring sparks hunger, it’s well worth stopping at 5 Corners Kitchen, according to Yankee.

“The oyster appetizers at French/Mediterranean bistro 5 Corners Kitchen will keep you busy until the delectable cod with roasted cauliflower floats your way,” wrote the publication.

Marblehead was named one of the best coastal small towns in America in 2023 by USA Today readers.

In Great Barrington, visitors can tackle the slopes during the winter at Ski Butternut, attend the Berkshire International Film Festival located downtown during the summer, and eat at Prairie Whale, where owner Mark Firth raises pigs, sheep, and chickens, according to Yankee. And there are plenty of opportunities for live music and theater— at The Guthrie Center in Great Barrington, Tanglewood in Lenox, Jacob’s Pillow in Becket, and Berkshire Theatre Group in Stockbridge.

Check out things to do in all the New England towns featured in this year’s best places to live list.
