Jamaica Plain is a vibrant neighborhood where young families, professionals, artists, and activists make their home. The neighborhood’s main thoroughfares, Centre Street and South Street, are lined with independently owned shops and restaurants.

These small business give JP its distinctive flair, cater to a wide variety of interests and needs, and represent the neighborhood’s cultural diversity.

The neighborhood’s Hyde, Jackson, and Egleston Squares have significant Spanish-speaking populations mainly from the Dominican Republic, as well as from Puerto Rico and Cuba. Hyde Square was officially named Boston’s Latin Quarter in 2016, with the Mass Cultural Council following suit in 2018 to name the area Boston’s Latin Quarter.

In 2019, approximately half of the 104 businesses along Centre Street in the Latin Quarter were Latinx-owned or managed and contribute to the identity of the district. These small business include barbershops, beauty salons , bodegas, restaurants where visitors enjoy Cuban, Puerto Rican and Dominican food, and more.

Jamaica Plain also has plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. There’s the iconic ice cream shop J.P. Licks, the dog-friendly bakery Blue Frog Bakery, Tres Gatos (a restaurant that also operates a book and record store), and plenty of other restaurants and bars from a variety of cuisines.

Apart from dining, there are plenty of other places to check out. If you’re on the hunt for a unique and affordable piece of clothing, head to one of the neighborhood’s many thrift stores. To add to your vinyl collection, head to one of several record stores. If you biked around Jamaica Pond or through the Arnold Arboretum, the neighborhood’s bike shops will keep you rolling.

The neighborhood’s list of small businesses goes on to include community theaters (The Footlight Club is America’s oldest community theater), Boston’s only video rental store, and more.
