A new Republican challenger is coming from the South Shore to face off against Sen. Elizabeth Warren this fall.

Quincy City Councilor President Ian Cain filed with the federal government and is planning to formally announce his candidacy for Senate later this month, he confirmed Monday.

41-year-old Cain told Boston.com Monday that his campaign is in its early stages.

“What we’re doing right now is just starting this process of forming the political startup that it is, making sure that we can get on the ballot,” Cain said. “It’s a big lift to get on the ballot here in Massachusetts.”

He declined to answer any additional questions about his “potential candidacy” until the formal announcement. Cain, who is currently serving as Ward 3 Councilor, teased his filing on X Monday morning.

Cain, the first openly gay and Black president of Quincy’s City Council, is also the co-founder of Qubic Labs, a nonprofit blockchain incubator based in the city. He has been on the council since 2016 and is a graduate of Boston College and Duke University.

The Boston Globe first reported on Cain as a potential candidate early last month. He joins multiple Republican candidates looking to stop Warren, 74, from entering a third term.

Last month, former Marine and cryptocurrency lawyer John Deaton announced his intent to run for Warren’s seat. He is from Detroit and recently moved to Massachusetts.
