Local lawmakers didn’t miss the mark this time around.
Grammy-winning hip-hop superstar Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott will have a street named after her.
Missy Elliott Boulevard has been voted for unanimously by Portsmouth, Va., city council members on Tuesday.
The Southwestern city was pitched by Portsmouth resident Erin Carter to rename McLean Street after the renowned native in an effort to help to enhance the city’s new entertainment district, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
“Missy Elliott has been a great rapper, actor, artist and she does deserve this recognition,” Councilwoman Lisa Lucas-Burke told the outlet, also reportedly calling for a key to the city for the trailblazer behind crossover hits including “Work It,” “Get Your Freak On” and “Hot Boyz.”
Throughout her 25-plus year career, Elliott has collaborated with a who’s who of hitmakers, including Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Ciara and Lizzo.
The boulevard will span from Airline Boulevard to Greenwood Drive, located within the Victory Crossing area near Tidewater Community College and the future home of the Portsmouth Rivers Casino.
“I am so Humbly Grateful #757 VA 2 up 2 down,” Elliott — whose given name is Melissa Arnette Elliott — shared on Twitter about the forthcoming honor. “i been through many ups & downs & times I wanted to give up but Gods plan was different! & all I can do is say Thank you & Thank you to everyone on the City Counsel I am so GRATEFUL for EVERYTHING”
