A Ukiah man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Sunday after allegedly hitting a woman pushing a stroller near the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds, the Ukiah Police Department reported.

According to the UPD, officers responded to the 1000 block of North State Street around 11:20 p.m. Aug. 7 for a report of a silver sedan hitting two pedestrians near the entrance to the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds.

When personnel from the UPD and the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority arrived, they reportedly found a woman lying on the ground near Garrett Drive who was unresponsive. The woman received medical treatment on scene for what was described as “major injuries” before being transported to Adventist Health Ukiah Valley.

The woman, identified only as a 31-year-old Ukiah resident, was “ultimately transported to an out-of-county hospital and is still in critical condition” as of Wednesday.

The second pedestrian injured was identified as “an infant child who was in a stroller at the time of the collision. The infant was also transported to AHUV, and was later released from the hospital after it was determined the infant did not sustain any injuries.”

The UPD also reported that the driver of the sedan, identified as German Dominguez-Galindo, 33, of Ukiah, approached officers and said he had been driving the vehicle involved in the collision. Dominguez-Galindo was described as displaying “objective signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication and was determined to have been operating the motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.”

Dominguez-Galindo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing injury, a felony, and booked into Mendocino County Jail. His vehicle was “located parked in a nearby parking lot with moderate damage to the front of the vehicle and was impounded as evidence by UPD,” which also closed North State Street between Magnolia Street and Garrett Drive for approximately three hours while officers investigated the scene.

The UPD reports that its investigation “shows the sedan was traveling southbound and collided with the female and infant who were crossing the roadway from the east sidewalk towards the west sidewalk of North State Street near the entrance of the Redwood Empire Fair. It is believed the female and infant victim were not inside a crosswalk at the time of the collision.”

The UPD reports that its investigation is ongoing, and urges anyone who witnessed the collision to call the UPD at 707-463-6262 to provide additional information.

The UPD expressed gratitude to the California Highway Patrol, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, State Parole, and the Mendocino County Probation Department for providing assistance, and reminded Ukiah residents to “exercise safe and defensive driving techniques, and to follow the speed limits.”
