Always does she share.
Mindy Kaling revealed in a new interview that each of the characters on Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” is a signal to the co-creator herself.
“One of the great things about a show like this, and creating it, is that every character, I think, represents a different side of my personality,” the Emmy-nominated “The Office” alum, 43, told People this week at the premiere of season 3, which hit the streamer Friday.
Kaling noted that her similarities to protagonist Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) exist “on a very, like, cellular level.”
The teen’s “desire of being loved and accepted and wanting a boyfriend,” said Kaling, “really mirrors my childhood.”
Kaling also relates though to the character of Devi’s mother, Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan), with whom the former said she shares both impatience and a “sort of no nonsense” attitude with regards to “young people and efficiency.”
“I feel so lucky to have Poorna and Maitreyi, these incredible actors, who can just bring [the themes of acceptance and love] to life in a way that we never could’ve even imagined as writers,” Kaling told the outlet.
“Never Have I Ever” debuted on Netflix in 2020 and will return for a fourth and final season, following its renewal earlier this year.
