12 New England bed & breakfasts were just named among the best in America

U.S. News & World Report released its inaugural Best Bed & Breakfast rankings.

12 New England bed & breakfasts are standouts in the U.S., according to U.S. News & World Report. The publication released its inaugural 2024 Best Bed & Breakfasts rankings on Tuesday, which evaluated more than 250 bed-and-breakfasts, inns, and small hotels in 17 cities and small towns.

The 17 destinations — six of them in New England — were chosen “based on U.S. News user research indicating that staying in B&B accommodations in these destinations would be of particular interest to travelers,” wrote the publication.

The New England destinations are: Boston; Salem; Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine; Burlington, Vermont; and Newport, R.I.

U.S. News then ranked the top properties from each market using star ratings and both expert and guest sentiment through awards and Tripadvisor user scores.

Top-notch bed & breakfasts have comfortable rooms, impeccable service, and perks such as common areas with fireplaces, libraries, and afternoon tea or evening wine and snack receptions, wrote the publication. Furthermore, personalized touches range from homemade breakfast to customized tours of the area.

“B&Bs typically offer a unique atmosphere, a complimentary breakfast and a cultural experience authentic to their given location,” said Zach Watson, senior travel editor at U.S. News, in a statement. “The 2024 Best Bed & Breakfasts rankings offer travelers options for staying at a top-rated property, with all the charm and personal touches of an intimate stay.”

Salem, Mass.:

Morning Glory Bed & Breakfast

Bar Harbor, Maine:

Portland, Maine:
Blind Tiger Portland — Danforth Street
Blind Tiger Portland — Carleton Street

Burlington, Vt.:
Stone Hill Inn (which is actually in Stowe)
Made INN Vermont, an Urban-Chic Boutique Bed & Breakfast

Newport, R.I.:

Hydrangea House Inn
