Maryland’s unemployment rate fell to 3.9% in July as the state added 12,000 jobs, marking its lowest point since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The state has added 78,600 jobs since this time last year, marking a 33% gain. More than half of those positions, about 44,000 jobs, were added in 2022, according to preliminary survey data from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

A preliminary jobs estimate from May was also revised to include an additional 1,400 jobs totaling 2,900 jobs.

The sector that saw the most growth — professional and business services — added 4,700 jobs last month. Manufacturing added 1,000 jobs and other sectors including education and health services, information, mining logging and construction also added hundreds of positions.

Meanwhile, trade, transportation and utilities lost about 600 jobs. Leisure and hospitality also lost about 300.
