CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. — Shenendehowa senior attacker Mason Carroll, of the boys’ lacrosse team, thought his seven-goal performance on Saturday afternoon was a career-high, but couldn’t say for sure. However, he was sure of what got him and the team ready for a 9-8, non-league win against visiting, Lakeland-Panas.
“I just felt good. I had a Red Bull before the game, we got hyped for the [junior-varsity] game we won in [triple] overtime,” Carroll said, postgame.

Along with the energy drink and a thrilling, triple-overtime, goal from JV’s Peyton Lynch, Carroll got some help from his senior, varsity teammate, Nathan Wolfe, who assisted on three of the seven scores, to go with one of his own in the win.
“Nate’s one of the guys I always look for when he’s dodging, so yeah, big, big thanks to him on those passes,” Carroll said.
“Mason and Nate, they know where each other are on the field, they trust each other, their teammates trust them and they’re seniors, so we need to be able to put the ball in their hands in big moments and they need to deliver and they did today,” Shenendehowa head coach Jason Gifford said. “They’ve been playing together for four years at the varsity level, forever as teammates.”
“Overall we want to be able to attack all over the field; we don’t want to be one-dimensional. I know when we get to playoffs and State games we need to have more than one or two guys contributing, so, we’ll continue to grow and expand in that way. But, we’re at our best when we’re moving the ball and everybody’s doing their job, crisp ball movement, finding the open guy, and against an outstanding goalie that leads to good, high-percentage shots for us,” Gifford explained.
Carroll scored three in the first and another in the second for a four-goal first half, however, the Rebels went for three in the opening two frames as well, including a pair from Kyle Gallagher.
Up 4-3 out of intermission, Carroll netted his fifth goal fewer than two minutes into the third quarter, before junior midfielder Reid Metler made it 6-3 with another score at the 5:19 mark of the frame.
Wolfe jumped on the board in the fourth quarter, giving Plainsmen a 7-4 lead after Lakeland-Panas added a score at the three-minute mark of the third quarter.
Carroll placed the finishing touches on the Rebels with two more tallies in the fourth, separated by 90 seconds, to go up 9-6. Despite two scores in the last six minutes, including the goal to come within one, with under 1:20 to go in regulation, the Rebels would fail to complete the comeback, unlike the Plainsmen JV squad in the game before.
In net, Plainsmen senior Billy Standaert made eight saves.
“This is a game of runs, this is a game of momentum and we talk all the time about just, kind of, eliminating runs. Their face-off guy got hot in the second half, but Billy stood tall and made some big saves, did a really nice job of handling the ball and getting it to our clearing personnel and we were up and out which was good,” Gifford noted.
With the win, the Plainsmen start 3-0 and host Colonie (0-1), Thursday at 4 p.m.
