? THREE TO SEE

A trio of musical highlights selected by Orlando Sentinel arts writer Matthew J. Palm.

NO. 5, AN OPERA ABOUT COCO CHANEL: Gabrielle Bonheur “Coco” Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion — becoming the only fashion designer to make Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Known for his immersive operas and experimental films, Mexican-American composer Nathan Felix has turned his attention to Chanel in a 75-minute opera about her life and — ooh, la, la! — her lovers. Molly Ann Anderson will play Chanel for the production, Oct. 1 at Timucua Arts Foundation, 2000 S. Summerlin Ave. in Orlando. More information: timucua.com

MESSIAH TIMES TWO: Nothing unites like music and not one, but two, community celebrations of Handel’s “Messiah” reach a major milestone this year — 50 years of singing “Hallelujah!”

The Messiah Choral Society will celebrate its golden anniversary with a free performance Nov. 20 in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Accompanied by full orchestra, the singers will be conducted by John Sinclair of the Bach Festival Society. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Want to sing? Rehearsals start in September. More information: messiahchoralsociety.org

The Jones High School Foundation is also celebrating the 50th anniversary of its “Messiah,” accompanied this year by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by music director Eric Jacobsen. Talk about a community celebration: Also participating are the Jones High School Concert Choir, directed by Andrea Green; the Jones High School Alumni and Community Choir, directed by Cicily Youngblood; and the University of Central Florida Singing Knights and Orlando Choral Society, both directed by Jeffery Redding.

The concert will be Dec. 8 at Jones High School, 801 S. Rio Grande Ave. in Orlando. More information: supportjoneshigh.com

CHORAL FESTIVAL: In its second choral festival Orlando Sings has a day of music that stretches from the Renaissance to the reaches of our galaxy.

The afternoon program, “Star Light” explores galactic mythology through Timothy C. Takach’s “Helios,” accompanied by visual projections in it regional premiere. Then in the evening, “Visionary Light” offers Ottorino Respighi’s “Botticelli Triptych,” inspired by Renaissance paintings; Jake Runesad’s “Into the Light,” inspired by the Reformation, and Jocelyn Hagen’s “The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci,” a multimedia presentation with da Vinci’s astounding words and drawings.

In between concerts, a catered dinner will be served.

The festival is May 20, 2023, at First United Methodist Church, 142 E. Jackson St. in Orlando. More information: orlandosings.org
