The Maryland legislature traditionally meets for three months at the beginning of each year, and many of the representatives also work jobs in the private sector throughout the rest of the year. The presiding officers of each house, Senate President Bill Ferguson and Speaker of the House Adrienne A. Jones, are allowed to call the members back for other special sessions.

At the State House, Anne Arundel County is represented by 15 delegates and five senators. After a power shake-up in the 2018 election, 10 delegates are Democrats, and five are Republicans. Three senators are Democrats and two are Republicans. The makeup of the delegation could change further following the midterm elections on Nov. 8, 2022.

Maryland elected officials from federal and state offices are up for reelection this year against a host of challengers from across the state and political spectrum. Some candidates will be running in reshaped or newly created districts this year following a lengthy process to redraw congressional and legislative district lines.

Redistricting

Due to a redrawing of congressional and legislative boundaries following the release of recent census data, some voters may be in different districts than they have been in the past.

Anne Arundel County will be represented by two congressional districts — District 3 and District 5. District 12 will now include a small portion of the northern part of Anne Arundel County. In the House of Delegates, District 12 is split into 12A and 12B; only 12B will include Anne Arundel County neighborhoods like Brooklyn Park.

Democratic and Republican primary elections on July 19 finalized the nominations for a raft of seats ahead of the general election Nov. 8.
