? THREE TO SEE

A trio of artistic highlights selected by Orlando Sentinel arts writer Matthew J. Palm.

AMERICANS WHO TELL THE TRUTH: What makes a great American? Artist-activist Robert Shetterly has an answer. For him, it’s any citizen who displays the “moral courage to confront issues of social, environmental and economic fairness.” Shetterly combined his patriotism and talent to create a series of 205 portraits depicting Americans past and present who live up to those ideals.

The Museum of Art — DeLand will put the portraits on view beginning Sept. 9; you can find out more and get a sneak peek at americanswhotellthetruth.org.

“‘Americans Who Tell the Truth’ has tried to be a lantern that throws its light forward and back,” says Shetterly. “Knowing the truth of the past’s struggles for justice is essential to seeing clearly the obstacles and possibilities in the future.” More information: moartdeland.org

FROM ELLA TO COLTRANE: THE JAZZ PHOTOGRAPHY OF ROGER KALLINS: Roger Kallins was a child piano prodigy who became a jazz aficionado and photographer. He combined his love into art, and Crealdé will display 45 of his jazz-musician portraits and stage scenes in an exhibition opening Sept 16. Kallins’ work spans more than five decades — from Ray Charles in Miami in 1958 to Sandip Burman at Daytona State College in 2007.

A native Brit, Kallins moved to the U.S. with his parents when he was 15. He moved to Ormond Beach in 2004 to care for his elderly mother and died of cancer in 2013. The photos in this exhibition are on loan from his friend Anthony Ehrlich. More information: crealde.org

MODERNISMS: IRANIAN, TURKISH AND INDIAN ART, 1960S-1970S: The Rollins Museum of Art hosts this exhibition of works that sheds light on how artists from Iran, Turkey and India drew on their specific heritages to create while also engaging globally. The exhibit consists of works from the Abby Weed Grey Collection of Modern Asian and Middle Eastern Art at New York University’s Grey Art Gallery, and there are a lot of them: Between 25 and 30 works from each of the three countries. The corresponding publication features journals, invoices, brochures and more from Grey’s papers that provide insight into her motivations to collect as well as the challenges she faced. The exhibition runs Sept. 17-Dec. 31 at the museum, on the Rollins College campus in Winter Park. More information: rollins.edu/rma
