According to a study released in The Lancet Global Health on Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2021, Fluvoxamine, a cheap antidepressant, reduced the need for hospitalization among high-risk adults with COVID-19.

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

There were 89,145 new coronavirus cases recorded over the last two weeks among Florida residents, bringing the cumulative total to 6,998,561. With 1,014 more fatalities on record, 79,573 Florida residents have died.

The death total over the last two weeks reflects an increase from the 994 reported in the two weeks prior, but deaths can take several days or weeks to be reported. Many newly reported deaths are of people who died before the last two weeks.

The number of cases over the last two weeks decreased compared to the 119,918 reported in the two weeks prior. Positivity decreased from 18.4% to 16.2%. That’s for new cases only and excludes anyone who previously tested positive.

Of note, the state reports deal only with Florida resident cases and exclude nonresident cases, which are no longer available.

Across the state, 3,886 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 from Aug. 17 to 23, according to the latest White House report. In comparison, 4,862 were hospitalized two weeks ago. Four weeks ago, it was 5,203.

Statewide, 15,999,823 residents, or 72% of people age 6 months and up, have received at least one vaccination shot, including 7,815,650 who have completed their shot regimens but not received an additional dose through Aug. 25. Meanwhile, 18,516 received an additional dose this week, bringing the total to 5,978,707.
