Pasadena-based Fuller Theological Seminary will host a special lecture on Tuesday, April 30, on the War in Ukraine and the Russian Orthodox Church.

The lecture, titled “The War in Ukraine and the Russian Orthodox Church: Why does Patriarch Kirill Support Putin’s Invasion?”, will focus on “the complex interplay between religion and politics in Ukraine”, the institution said in a recent press release.

It will take place between 7:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at Fuller’s Travis Auditorium, located at 180 North Oakland Ave. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Attendees will hear from guest speaker Dr. Kimmo Kääriäinen, who serves as the head of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Church Council of the Lutheran Church in Finland. Kääriäinen offers valuable knowledge and insight into the intersection of religion and international affairs, the institution said.

“This lecture represents a crucial opportunity for our community and the public at large to engage with the pressing issues at the intersection of faith and global conflicts,” said David Emmanuel Goatley, president of the seminary. “We are honored to have Dr. Kääriäinen with us to explore the reasons behind Patriarch Kirill’s support for Putin’s invasion, providing a platform for informed dialogue and deeper understanding.”

Audiences will be able to participate in a Q&A, which is moderated by Dr. Kutter Callaway, associate dean of Fuller’s Center for Advanced Theological Studies.

Parking will be provided in the School of Psychology lot at the corner of Madison and Walnut.

A Zoom option will be available for those who can not attend in-person. To RSVP for the event, visit: https://kaariainenukraine.my.canva.site/about
