Construction is anticipated to start at the end of the month on a stretch of 37th Street in Evans from Sienna Avenue to Stampede Drive.

The stretch of road — just east of 47th Avenue — will be widened as the next phase of the 37th Street Widening Project, according to a city of Evans Facebook post.

The 37th Street Widening Project was approved in 2019 and intends to widen 37th Street to four lanes from 35th Avenue to 65th Avenue. Construction began on Phase 1 in March of last year, with the construction of a roundabout at 37th Street and 47th Avenue, according to the city’s Facebook page.

The project was not intended to close 37th Street fully, but the city said recent discussions with Atmos Energy revealed both lanes must be closed for crews to safely relocate existing gas lines. The road is expected to open — at least partially — once Atmos is finished, according to the post.

The detour will direct drivers to use U.S. 34 to the north or 49th Street to the south. Signs indicating detours will be placed in the coming weeks.

Editor’s note: This story was updated Thursday afternoon to correct the headline to 37th Street. An earlier version misstated the name of the street in the headline.
