President Biden nominated Arun Subramanian on Friday to become the first judge of South Asian descent to serve on the Southern District of New York.
Subramanian, a Columbia Law School graduate who clerked for the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is a partner at Susman Godfrey LLP in New York, where he has worked since 2007.
He is one in a slate of new federal judicial nominees the White House says will help make the bench more reflective of America.
“These choices also continue to fulfill the President’s promise to ensure that the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country,” the White House said in a statement.
“All of (them) are extraordinarily qualified, experienced and devoted to the rule of law and our Constitution,” the statement added.
Subramanian will need to be confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate.
The slate of nominees is Biden’s 26th round of picks for federal judicial positions and his thirteenth slate of nominations this year.
He has nominated a record 143 judges in his first two years in office and won more confirmations in his first year in office than any president since John F. Kennedy.
Biden nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. The accomplished appeals court judge won a bruising confirmation fight to take the spot as the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court.
