A stabbing at an eastern North Carolina high school has left one person dead and two injured, authorities said.

The incident happened early Thursday morning, during the first week of classes at Northside High School, in Jacksonville, about 55 miles north of Willmington.

Jacksonville Police Chief Mike Yaniero told reporters during a midmornig news conference that two minors were taken to a nearby hospital where one later died.

On teacher was also injured in the incident, but he was not stabbed, he said.

According to Yaniero, a fight broke out around 7 a.m. in a school common area.

A school resource officer arrived “within seconds,” provided first-aid help, and then contacted Jacksonville police and the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency medical services personnel arrived and took the victims, both students, to the Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune.

The suspect, who is also a student at the school, was arrested. He is now in custody.

A lockdown was put in place until 8:45 a.m. Students were then dismissed.

All sporting events have been canceled, and students will attend online classes tomorrow.

The school will resume in-person classes on Tuesday.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Yaniero. No names have been released.
