Carson Heidecker went from four Division II offers at Columbia High School to 17 in Division I for his final year of college eligibility.

In the aftermath of Notre Dame College announcing it will shut down, the Division II NCAA All-American offensive lineman and Falcons’ captain committed to play for Ohio University on April 14.

Heidecker received offers from various spots, which included JUCO, NAIA, Division II and Division I programs. His goal was to find the right fit.

“It was (about the) fit,” he said. “When I came down to it, it was between Weber State (in Utah) and OU. I was sitting there and asking where I saw myself. Where am I going to see a team that is going to win and where can I win at the highest level, play great competition and my family can still come out and see me. ”

Ohio went 10-3 (6-2 in MAC) and defeated Georgia Southern, 41-21, in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.

Ohio has its spring football practice under way, but Heidecker will not be with them. Heidecker is not complacent with just being on the roster of a Division I team.

“There is a little sense of pride knowing that I got there, but the job is not done. I am there and I am on a roster. Now, I want to go and compete and play,” he said.

Knowing that he will not be there for spring football, Heidecker plans to prioritize Ohio’s playbook and football terminology, as he is confident in his physical capabilities.

“I am going to go early this summer. They are going to send me the playbook for the next few days with film. I have to go through the film, ask as many questions and be annoyed with the questions. I am trying to figure out the playbook. … I know the speed and the way it’s played. Now, it’s about getting the lingo, understanding how they want their football and keeping in contact with (offensive line coach Allen Rudolph) to make sure I am up to speed when camp starts.”

Heidecker, a 6-3, 285-pound lineman, was a Division II All-American, as the Falcons went 7-3 (6-3 in Mountain East Conference).

He officially became the second member of his family to play Division I college football. Brandon Heidecker, his cousin, played at Toledo. With that came a sense of pride for Carson Heidecker.

“Coming out of Columbia, you are obviously not recruited to play (Division I) a lot. Now, two of the three (Division I athletes from Columbia) are from my family,” he said.

Heidecker was a Division VI first-team All-Ohioan in 2019 at Columbia. The Raiders went 4-6 (4-3 in LC8). He finished his career at Notre Dame as a two-time first-team All-MEC selection and three-time MEC champion.
