A nonprofit dedicated to open space will offer two local nature-oriented events on the Palos Verdes Peninsula this weekend, in the lead-up to the upcoming Earth Day.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will present a volunteer opportunity from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 20, at White Point Nature Preserve and will then host the debut of the film “Giants Rising” at at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Dana Middle School. The preserve and middle school are both in San Pedro.

Earth Day is on Monday, April 22.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Earth Day and show our appreciation for both our state and the Peninsula’s unique natural beauty through these special events,” Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy Executive Director Adrienne Mohan  said in a press release.

At the Saturday volunteer event, a free family-friendly activity, participants will help plant, mulch, weed and water at a native plant demonstration garden and in wildlife habitat areas. Los Angeles Councilmember Tim McOsker, who represents District 15, is scheduled to attend.

There will also be guided nature walks, refreshments and a raffle with nature-themed prizes.

The Sunday film premiere costs $10 in advance or $15 at the door. “Giants Rising” shows the spectacular beauty of the California redwood trees and the major challenges they face. The film was produced in parntership with the Redford Center and is narrated by musician Michael Franti.

There is a VIP wine reception at 3 p.m. before the screening for Earth Day sponsors. There are still sponsorship opportunities available at pvplc.org.
