West central area multi-sport athlete killed in car crash Sunday

GRANT COUNTY — An 18-year-old who was a multi-sport athlete at West Central Area High School died in a head-on collision Sunday in Grant County.

Tyler David Stone of Hoffman, 18, was killed in the crash at Highway 79 and County Road 21 in Sanford Township, according to a Minnesota State Patrol accident report.

A 23-year-old driver from Brandon, Dalton James Johnson, was taken to the Prairie Ridge Hospital in Elbow Lake with non-life-threatening injuries.

Stone was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Highway 79 and Johnson was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado westbound when the crash occurred at 4:29 p.m. Sunday.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to the State Patrol report.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Prairie Ridge Ambulance and the Elbow Lake Fire Department all responded to the call.

Stone was a senior at West Central Area High School and was a multi-sport athlete. The West Central Area-Ashby football team posted a tribute to Stone on their Facebook page on Monday morning.

The crash is currently under investigation.
