Northern Colorado softball’s Erin Caviness wins 2nd Big Sky honor

Erin Caviness, a senior pitcher on the Northern Colorado softball team, was recognized by the Big Sky Conference as pitcher of the week Tuesday for the second time this season.

Caviness won two games last weekend and earned a save in the third as UNC swept Big Sky opponent Weber State April 12-13 at Gloria Rodriguez Field. Caviness had a 0.53 earned run average and struck out 11 with one walk in 13 innings against the Wildcats.

Caviness was also named the Big Sky Conference pitcher of the week Feb. 26. She is from Thornton and played high school softball at Holy Family in Broomfield.

Caviness this season has a 13-6 record with 22 appearances and 18 starts. She’s allowed 94 hits and 34 runs in 121.1 innings pitched (a 2.13 ERA) with 136 strikeouts and 23 walks. Opponents are hitting .207 against her.

UNC is 7-2 in the Big Sky Conference and 22-19 overall. The Bears are on a seven-game winning streak heading into their final home series of the regular season. UNC hosts Idaho State for three games, at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday at Gloria Rodriguez Field.

The Bengals are 3-3 in the Big Sky. Idaho State was 21-20 overall and on a three-game winning streak ahead of a Tuesday evening game at Brigham Young.
