Early into the 2022 season, Weldon Valley volleyball struggled to string together much success. That all changed last week.

In three back-to-back contests on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the Warriors took down Caliche, Briggsdale and Brush. The first two opponents lost in clean sweeps as Brush battled them to three sets in a tournament that only played to best of three.

On Tuesday, they never let the Buffaloes get close to them as they secured victory with 25-16, 25-16 and 25-15 set scores.

The Falcons, however, made it much more interesting on Thursday. The Warriors bounced out to a strong start in the first set to stave off a Briggsdale rally. They won 25-22, but the Falcons used the energy they gained in the first set to drive the second set to extra points.

Weldon Valley eventually won that one 26-24 before grounding the Falcons for good in a 25-20 third set. On Saturday, in a four-team tournament, the Warriors battled with Brush to steal victory in the end.

Weldon Valley began the Brush match on a high, burying the Beetdiggers with a 25-14 score. The Diggers, however, stormed back to claim the second set by a tight 25-22 decision to force a third set, which the Warriors won with relative ease and a 15-9 final.

They finished that tournament with a 2-1 loss to Timnath (25-17, 19-25, 15-9) and a 2-0 loss to Haxtun (25-20, 27-25).

The Warriors, now 4-6, will have to face their toughest opponent yet in top-ranked and unbeaten Merino on Thursday before hosting a 5-6 Prairie team on Friday night. Weldon Valley, so far, has played well against the competition that’s more on their level, so Friday’s contest will be a good litmus test to see where they’re at this point in the season.
