By this point in the season, it’s no secret that Sterling houses some impressive track and field athletes. The Tigers proved as much during their trip to Wray last week for the Dick Evans Invitational, during which both the boys and the girls teams nabbed sixth place with 19 total top-10 finishes.

The boys kicked it off in the 100-meter dash, where junior Hunter Diamond won out with 11.33 seconds, and junior Carter Jaeger (second, 11.50 seconds) and senior Wyatt Milburn (third, 11.68 seconds) tracked just behind. Jaeger added third in the long jump after hurling himself 19 feet, 0.5 inches, followed by seventh from senior Wesley Knuppel (18–2.5) and eighth from freshman Luke Petersen (18–2)

Senior Haley Emmerson, likewise, picked up a win in the 300 hurdles and achieved the feat with a 50.02 mark. Senior Alyssa Slade, jumping into the field side of things, won the high jump by being the first to clear the 4-foot, 10-inch bar.

The girls 4×200 relay raced toward a silver medal in its event and the ladies collected a time of 53.49 seconds. The boys 4×200 relay won out in its event with a time of 1 minute, 33.40 seconds. The boys followed that performance up with another victory, this time in the 4×400, by recording a 3:39.85 time.

Junior Courtney Canada met stiff competition in the pole vault, but placed second with a clearance of 9–2. Senior Elizabeth Miller bowed out a foot lower, which secured her eighth place.

Several ladies threw their hat in the ring for the long jump, but only two managed to make the podium. Seniors Audrey Reeves and Emmie Farquhar backed up each other’s efforts with fourth (14–4.5) and fifth (14–1.5), respectively. The same pair strove for third (Reeves) and fourth (Farquhar) in the triple jump with leaps of 31–10 and 30–8.75.

Freshman Maeve Betzmer tested her luck in the 100 dash and ran away with sixth place and a time of 14.20, then placed eighth in the 200 by clocking in at 29.62. Freshman Jonathan Diaz paced his way to ninth in the 100 hurdles by crossing the finish line at 19.59. He bested himself with sixth place in the 300 hurdles with a 48.20 mark.

Junior Vanessa Harty wrapped up the effort with sixth in the shot put thanks to a distance of 29–10.
