GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KVRR) – UND’s Energy and Environmental Research Center has landed a major award to study enhanced oil recovery.

The Department of Energy is giving the center $11.6 million to investigate how CO2 injected into an unconventional reservoir in the Bakken Formation will result in increased oil and gas production.

They will also look into the feasibility for permanent storage of CO2 in unconventional shale oil and gas reservoirs and repurpose existing infrastructure.

The study will last 18 months and be conducted in the field and in the lab.

Sen. John Hoeven says this project will help maximize the full potential of the Bakken.
