Life lab instructor Amy Carlson on Thursday directs traffic for first graders at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School as the lumber, fasteners, tools and soil for a pair of new garden boxes at the Felton school's garden was delivered by staff from Big Creek Lumber. Now in its eighth year, Big Creek Lumber’s School Garden Grant Program provides kits that are delivered directly to the schools so they can assemble and use them immediately. The garden kits include redwood lumber courtesy of Big Creek Lumber, fasteners courtesy of Midwest Fasteners and garden tools courtesy of Orgill. As part of Big Creek’s 70th Anniversary Celebration in 2016, the garden grant program was established to support school garden programs in the communities where the company does business including much of Santa Cruz, Watsonville and San Lorenzo Valley, as well as in Atwater, Half Moon Bay, Paso Robles and Vallejo. Since its inception, 82 schools have received the donation. (Shmuel Thaler - Santa Cruz Sentinel)
