Between his his 2:30 a.m. wake-up time and shirtless selfies that catch even Tom Brady’s eye, Mark Wahlberg is known for being a fitness fanatic. So when he visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, it’s no surprise that he and host Ellen DeGeneres jumped into discussing his gym and eating habits.

The Dorchester native told DeGeneres that he was of the “old school bodybuilding philosophy” that he needed eat every three hours and consume “ridiculous” amounts of protein. But while working on his last movie, he found himself needing to slim down.

“I started having some issues because of eating so much,” he said. “I was eating so much protein, and I was storing it and using it other than building lean muscle. So I was getting a leaky gut, so I just literally did a bone broth fast.”

Wahlberg may be referring to his upcoming role as the title character in “Good Joe Bell,” to which the actor has said he took a break from lifting weights and “got as thin as possible.” With a steady stream of bone broth, Wahlberg noted that he dropped 10 pounds in a matter of five days.

“First day, nobody wanted to be around me. For sure. I was miserable,” he said. “But then I started having more energy. I’m so lucky and fortunate to have my job and do what I do that there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to prepare.”
