Restored just in time for Modernism Week 2020

Palm Springs, California, is packed full of gorgeous midcentury architecture, and the latest beauty to cross our desk is this five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath in the Little Tuscany neighborhood. First constructed in 1948 by architectural designer Herbert Burns, the house was partially demolished and sat neglected for years before being restored for Modernism Week 2020.

Thomboy Properties led the renovation, working to bring back the home’s intrinstic glamour. Burns was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier, and the design uses horizontal lines with flat roofs, cantilevered overhangs, vertical pylons, screens, grids, and planters.

Like other Late Moderne homes, this property seamlessly blends the indoor-outdoor lifestyle, using Santa Fe block on both the inside and outside of the house. Wide roof overhangs provide shade protection from the desert sun, while natural materials like wood and Arizona sandstone help the house fit into the environment.

The 4,700-square-foot home’s restoration included pouring new terrazzo floors, adding solar, and installing Fleetwood sliding doors and windows. A custom kitchen features teak cabinetry, a large island, and professional appliances, while outside the home is picture-perfect with a pool, spa, fire pit, and outdoor kitchen. Love what you see? 574 West Mariscal Road is on the market now for $3,200,000.
