A heavy-metal guitarist and reputed member of the far-right group the Oath Keepers became the first Capitol rioter Friday to cop a plea deal for the Jan. 6 siege.
Jon Ryan Schaffer, who plays in the band “Iced Earth,” will provide information to the feds in the hopes of a lighter sentence for his role in the riot, which led to the deaths of five people, including a Capitol Police officer.
Schaffer may be placed in witness protection as he works with law enforcement, the Associated Press reported.
As part of the deal, Schaffer will cop to two criminal counts: obstruction of an official proceeding, and entering and remaining in a restricted building with a dangerous or deadly weapon.
Schaffer is accused of storming the Capitol with throngs of other Donald Trump supporters in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Prosecutors allege that Schaffer discharged bear spray at police during the siege.
Federal authorities in DC have charged more than 300 people with crimes for their roles in the uprising, but Schaffer is the first to enter a plea agreement with prosecutors.
DOJ officials are working to secure plea deals with a number of other suspected rioters.
