DANVILLE — PG&E reported it was responding to a power outage in Danville that at its height had affected thousands of customers Sunday night.

The utility said it had dispatched crews to the location of the power failure to determine the cause and restore service.

“Our preliminary determination was that the outage was caused by the weather,” PG&E stated in an incident post on its website.

The utility didn’t immediately provide further details on the weather-related nature of the situation.

“It’s believed to be a weather-related outage, but we don’t have any more details,” PG&E spokesperson J.D. Guidi said.

At the start of the power failure, about 4,850 customers were affected. By roughly 8 p.m. the number was 3,500. By 9 p.m., the number of affected customers was down to about 1,600, according to PG&E. By 10 p.m., the affected number was about 700.

The high temperature in Danville on Sunday was 96 degrees. At 9 p.m. the temperature in Danville was reported to be 69 degrees.

State electricity officials have expressed concern in recent days that soaring temperatures during June could cause power outages.

Transformers sometimes fail during periods of high temperatures.

The power outage began at 7 p.m., PG&E said.

“There is no estimated time for full restoral” of power, Guidi said.
