Just in time for the Fourth of July celebration, New York — the home of the Statue of Liberty — has been named the least patriotic state in the U.S. in a new study.

California, the most populous state in the union, ranks 47th in the same study, which was conducted by the site Wallethub.com. Others to receive low scores include Florida, Connecticut and Michigan.

On the other side of scale, Montana was named the most patriotic state, with (in order) Alaska, Maryland, Vermont and New Hampshire rounding out the top 5.

States were compared in “13 key indicators of patriotism,” ranging “from the state’s military enlistees and veterans to the share of adults who voted in the 2020 presidential election to AmeriCorps volunteers per capita,” according to WalletHub.

Georgia ranked No. 1 for having the most military enlistees, while North Dakota came in last.

Alaska has the most veterans per capita and New York has the least. California came in at No. 48 in this regard.

Vermont is tops when it comes to having the most Peace Corps volunteers per capita and Mississippi is at the bottom of that list.

New Jersey has the highest percentage of people who voted in the 2020 presidential election and Arkansas has the least.

Utah has the highest volunteer rate and Florida has the lowest.

Surprisingly, California ranked low — No. 46 — in terms of the volunteering rate. Yet, that was still ahead of New York, which came in at No. 47.

Each state was awarded points for how well they placed in each category and then the points were tallied up to give the final rankings.

Montana, the champ of this study, ended up with 61.91 — making it, by these measures, nearly three times as patriotic as New York.
