The Rangers split the first two games of the season against the rival Islanders, before falling to the Devils on Tuesday. It’s been an up-and-down start, but it’s still so early in this shortened 56-game season. It’s also early in Season 2 of the “Up In The Blue Seats” podcast with Rangers great Ron Duguay and new co-host Mollie Walker. But it’s not too early to have a hockey legend on the show. Ron and Mollie chat with Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Bossy and Hall of Fame writer Larry Brooks on the newest episode.

Up In The Blue Seats Opening with Ron Duguay & Mollie Walker:

  • Devils looked really good against the Rangers on Tuesday. Blueshirts got off to a bad start and it came back to bite them. Jack Hughes off to a great start to the season. No production from the top six for the Rangers.
  • Rangers split first two games with the Islanders. One of the worst losses under David Quinn in season opener. Alexandar Georgiev was fantastic in the shutout win over the Isles.
  • Road trip ahead against the Penguins and Sabres.
  • Ron has a new cat, Thea. Sarah McCrory was scratched under her eye by her cat. Sarah looks like she suited up for the Rangers. Mollie has a theory to get her mom to get her a cat…have her favorite Ranger Ron Duguay convince her.

Larry Brooks Interview:
NY Post Hall of Fame Rangers beat writer

  • Spreading ice time. You have eight talented guys. Some nights, guys are not going to get as much playing time as you would think. Jack Johnson is a victim of reputation right now more than anything else.
  • Breaking down the Tony DeAngelo situation. Thinks we will see him back in the lineup on Friday. There isn’t a case to keep him out.
  • Jacob Trouba stepping up as a leader. Needs to elevate play on a consistent basis.
  • Devils are a team worth paying attention to. Hughes playing at an elite level. MacKenzie Blackwood is a really good and underrated goaltender.
  • Comparing Hughes to Kaapo Kakko. Hughes obviously ahead of him. Kakko’s progress is there. Handling the puck more. It’s coming for him.

Mike Bossy Interview:
Islanders legend, Hockey Hall of Famer, four-time Stanley Cup champion

  • His first month in training camp. Eye-opening experience. Was a little shy and lacked confidence.
  • Getting married early, unlike Ron. “Ron’s a guy who likes to free wheel.”
  • Playing alongside Bryan Trottier and Clark Gillies and how good they were.
  • Reacting to the first two Rangers-Islanders games. Dives into the Rangers-Islanders rivalry and how special it is.
  • Alexis Lafreniere winning Bossy’s award for best NHL prospect. Analyzing his game and how good he could be. He does things the right way. It’s just a matter of him adjusting to the NHL.
  • Went to Studio 54 one time briefly in 1979 and never went back. It was not his scene. “I had never seen anything like it in my life. That one five-minute visit taught me that I should never go back there.”

You’ve Got Mail: Ron and Mollie respond to a caller’s voicemail on the Rangers getting off to slow starts and taking early penalties.
