Now that Daniel Jones is the Giants’ starting quarterback, here’s a look at his first four opponents:
Sunday at Tampa Bay
Jones’ first chance to prove he can succeed in New York comes against someone who couldn’t. Despite inheriting a defense ranked 27th overall last season, former Jets coach Todd Bowles’ first year as Buccaneers defensive coordinator is off to a solid start. Tampa Bay just surrendered 14 points in a win over the Panthers, ranks eighth in the NFL in total yards allowed and features linebacker Shaquil Barrett, who ranks second in the league with four sacks.
Sept. 29 vs. Washington
The rest of the NFC East has already enjoyed dates with the Redskins’ defense. Despite a star-studded unit including newly acquired safety Landon Collins and cornerback Josh Norman, Washington allowed 63 combined points to the Eagles and Cowboys, along with 582 passing yards and six passing touchdowns, while registering just two sacks and one interception.
Oct. 6 vs. Minnesota
The Vikings’ veteran defense will provide challenges for the rookie quarterback on multiple fronts. Led by Danielle Hunter, Linval Joseph and Everson Griffen, Minnesota tied for second in sacks in the NFL last year, while defensive backs Xavier Rhodes and Harrison Smith have combined for six Pro Bowl selections. Jones will have new wide receiver Golden Tate active for this one, as he returns from his four-game suspension.
Oct. 10 at New England
Jones may have no tougher test all season, traveling to face Bill Belichick and the defending Super Bowl champions on a short week. Displaying the defensive dominance of the early title teams of their dynasty, the Patriots have allowed a total of three points through their first two weeks, while recording eight sacks, five interceptions and two touchdowns.
