Marlins vs. Diamondbacks: Emerging ace makes this an Under

The Miami Marlins are not lighting it up on offense, but they have a pitcher going on Wednesday who is doing a great job of hanging zeroes on the board.

Sandy Alcantara has had the total stay Under in five of his past six starts, with none of those games topping nine total runs — the total for the Marlins-Arizona Diamondbacks matchup on Wednesday. He faces a Diamondbacks team that enters this series having scored four runs or fewer in 11 of its past 12 games.

The Marlins are averaging 3.06 runs per game in Alcantara’s starts and entered the series scoring four runs or fewer in eight of their past 10 games. While Mike Leake had given up four or more earned runs in four out of his first six starts with Arizona, he has given up just two runs in three out of his past four.

Alcantara has posted a 2.59 ERA with opponents hitting for a .183 batting average since the beginning of August, which, coupled with his giving up one run in 16 innings in his past two starts, has the makings of an offensive struggle with runs being hard to come by.

The play: Marlins-Diamondbacks, Under 9 runs.
