SUNNYVALE — Facebook is preparing to open a mega campus in Sunnyvale, a huge office development where the social networking titan has agreed to lease roughly 1 million square feet.

The new offices, to officially open Wednesday evening, represent the first Sunnyvale presence for the social media behemoth.

“The new campus will host a mix of new hires and relocated team members,” according to information released by Facebook.

Veteran real estate firm Jay Paul Co. is the developer of the complex, which is known as Moffett Towers 2.

The Facebook lease in March 2018 was at the time the largest rental transaction in the Bay Area. The deal was arranged through a team from commercial realty brokerage Newmark Knight Frank that was led by Philip Mahoney, an executive vice chairman with Newmark.

The jaw-dropping deal also was notable because the transaction represented the first time that Facebook had ventured into Sunnyvale.

Menlo Park-based Facebook also has established a major beachhead in Fremont. Through a series of transactions, Facebook has leased about 1 million square feet in Fremont.

In Sunnyvale, the Facebook campus at Moffett Towers 2 will feature two cafes, as well as 739 conference rooms and workrooms. Facebook opened one building in August and is slated to open the other two buildings in its Sunnyvale campus in 2021.

“Facebook’s infrastructure, artificial reality, virtual reality, recruiting, facilities, global operations, and legal teams” will have offices in the new Sunnyvale campus, according to Facebook.
