NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say two North Carolina sheriff’s deputies had to be treated for narcotic exposure after a traffic stop in which the motorist they pulled over was arrested.

The Craven County Sheriff’s Office says in a news release that two of its deputies stopped 49-year-old Reginal Smith of Vanceboro around 2 a.m. Wednesday on N.C. Highway 43 near New Bern.

According to the news release, it was during the search of the vehicle that the two deputies showed signs of narcotic exposure. The deputies were taken to a hospital, where they were treated and released.

Smith was charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia. His status was immediately available as of Wednesday afternoon.
