Flights cancelled after JetBlue planes collide on tarmac at Logan

The jets made contact while in the de-icing area, according to Massport.

Two JetBlue planes collided on the tarmac of Logan Airport on Thursday morning.

The jets made contact while in the de-icing area, according to Massport, when one plane’s wingtip touched another plane’s tail. There were no injuries and both flights were canceled, wrote Massport in an email to Boston.com.

The incident happened at 6:40 a.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). JetBlue Flight 777 was heading to Las Vegas and JetBlue Flight 551 was heading to Orlando, Florida.

“A JetBlue aircraft entering a de-icing pad lane at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) came into contact with another JetBlue aircraft on an adjacent de-icing pad lane, causing damage to one aircraft’s winglet and the other aircraft’s tail section,” wrote JetBlue, in a statement.

“No injuries were reported by customers or crewmembers on either aircraft,” the airline wrote. “Both aircraft will be taken out of service for repairs, and JetBlue flight 777 to Las Vegas and JetBlue flight 551 to Orlando will operate on other aircraft.  Safety is JetBlue’s priority, and we will work to determine how and why this incident occurred.”

The FAA said it is investigating the matter.

Dave Sauter, a passenger on Flight 777, told Boston 25 News that his plane was full when the incident happened and he was heading to Las Vegas for a Super Bowl event.

JetBlue is Logan Airport’s largest carrier.
