Suspect in plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pleads guilty

One of six men accused of plotting to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pleaded guilty Wednesday and will cooperate with authorities, federal prosecutors said.

Ty Garbin, 25, will “fully cooperate” with investigators as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors in the kidnapping conspiracy case targeting the Wolverine State governor, according to court records filed Wednesday.

Garbin was part of a paramilitary crew busted by the FBI in October for plotting to kidnap and possibly execute Whitmer over their opposition to her statewide coronavirus lockdown order.

Federal prosecutors unsealed an indictment against the six men in December.

According to the plea agreement, Garbin admitted that the group, known as the Wolverine Watchmen, hatched the plot in June and even conducted a “field training exercise” in Cambria, Wisconsin.

The militia members even built a plywood “shoot house” to practice breaching the state capitol or a home, the agreement said.

The men also discussed executing Michigan officials.

Garbin will now provide prosecutors with details in their cases against the other accused plotters — Adam Dean Fox, Barry Gordo Croft, Kaleb James Franks, Daniel Joseph Harris and Brandon Michael-Ray Caserta.

“The defendant’s cooperation will consist of all steps needed to uncover and prosecute such crimes, including but not limited to, providing investigators with a full, complete and truthful statement concerning his knowledge of any and all criminal activity of which he is aware,” the agreement says.

Garbin is also required to submit to a polygraph test if requested.

In exchange, prosecutors agree not to file additional charges against Garbin and will not oppose requests to lessen his sentence in the case.
