Hillary Clinton Says “Nobody Likes” Bernie Sanders

“It's all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it."

With less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses, Hillary Clinton has refused to say whether or not she'll endorse whoever wins the Democratic nomination and faces off against Donald Trump in November. More specifically, she won't commit to endorsing the candidate if it's her former opponent, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders.

Clinton spoke to the Hollywood Reporter ahead of the release of a four-part Hulu documentary about her, titled Hillary. In the documentary, she has harsh words for Sanders, saying, "He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done. He was a career politician. It's all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into it."

When asked by THR if that assessment still holds, she replied, "Yes, it does." Her answer was much longer when she was then asked if she would endorse Sanders and campaign for him should he get the nomination:

I'm not going to go there yet. We're still in a very vigorous primary season. I will say, however, that it's not only him, it's the culture around him. It's his leadership team. It's his prominent supporters. It's his online Bernie Bros and their relentless attacks on lots of his competitors, particularly the women. And I really hope people are paying attention to that because it should be worrisome that he has permitted this culture—not only permitted, [he] seems to really be very much supporting it. And I don't think we want to go down that road again where you campaign by insult and attack and maybe you try to get some distance from it, but you either don't know what your campaign and supporters are doing or you're just giving them a wink and you want them to go after Kamala [Harris] or after Elizabeth [Warren]. I think that that's a pattern that people should take into account when they make their decisions.

Later in the interview, Clinton was asked if she has considered running for president again in 2020. She responded, "I'm grateful for people's confidence, but I did think it was right for me to step back. I'll do anything I can to defeat the current incumbent, and to reverse a lot of his damaging policies."

NBC News reporter Geoff Bennett asked Sanders on Tuesday morning to respond to Clinton's claim that "nobody likes him." Sanders replied, "On a good day, my wife likes me, so let’s clear the air on that one." Bennett followed up, asking why Sanders thought Clinton was still discussing 2016. "That’s a good question," Sanders said. "You should ask her."

This isn't the first time that Clinton has complained about Sanders after the 2016 election. In an interview with Howard Stern late last year, she said of Sanders, "He hurt me, there’s no doubt about it. And I hope he doesn’t do it again to whoever gets the nomination. Once is enough."

She was referring explicitly to Sanders refusal to concede to her even after she had enough superdelegates to lock up the nomination—which is what Clinton herself did once Barack Obama had effectively clinched his own nomination in 2008. Sanders stayed in the primary for another month before conceding, after which he campaigned so much for Clinton that her staffers later complained about it to reporters. In just the first five days of his supporting Clinton, he attended 14 campaign events for her. According to Politico, in the last three months before the election Sanders attended 39 rallies in 13 states, including 17 events in 11 states in just the last week. In the end, a higher percentage of Sanders supporters wound up voting for Clinton in 2016 than Clinton supporters did for Obama in 2008.

NOTE: This story has been updated to include Clinton's addition that she will do "anything [she] can" to defeat Donald Trump.
