Butler vs. Villanova: Rebounding prowess makes Under the bet

The scores involving games with Butler and Villanova have gone in opposite directions this past week, which should make for an intriguing showdown on Tuesday night at Villanova’s Pavilion.

Prior to its last two games, Butler had not allowed an opponent to exceed 67 points this season. Many bettors might be quick to react to the Bulldogs giving up 77 and 78 points, respectively, in losses to Seton Hall and DePaul, but Butler still ranks 18th in the nation in points per possession allowed despite the slip-ups.

Neither team will be looking to push the tempo. Villanova ranks 235th in the country in possessions per game while the Bulldogs are 347th.

Villanova began the season scoring at least 78 points in nine of its first 10 games, but since has gone to a defense-heavy style. The Wildcats have gotten past 70 points in two of their last seven games — and one of those results was aided by overtime.

Villanova relies on the 3-point shot, ranking 20th in college basketball in the percentage of points that come from 3s. With Butler ranking 12th in the country in 3-point shooting percentage defense, it could lead to Villanova having to look for different ways to score.

With both teams entering Tuesday ranked in the top 15 in defensive rebound rate, it should lead to a bunch of one-and-done possessions and a slow, lower scoring game.

The play: Butler-Villanova, Under 129.
