Selena Gomez Opens Up About Being On The Receiving End of Body Shaming: 'It Really Messed Me Up'

Selena Gomez sat down for a candid interview pal Raquelle Stevens‘s Giving Back Generation podcast, where she opened up about experiencing body shaming for the first time.

The 27-year-old singer opened up about the hurt she felt after reading the comments about her weight, while she was battling several health issues, including lupus.

“I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time,” Selena shared. “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

She further explained that while it’s not lupus that affects her weight, it is the medication she takes for her health issues combined that contributes to it.

“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest. So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that,” Selena adds. “In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.”

The body-shaming and hurtful comments “got to me big time,” and added to her stress. “[It] really messed me up for a bit.”

Selena received a kidney transplant from close friend, Francia Raisa, back in 2017, due to her battle with lupus.
