A New England city ranked among Fodor’s top travel destinations next year. It’s not Boston.

The city's restaurants were a contributing factor, according to Fodor's.

A New England city lauded for its culinary scene just made Fodor’s list of best places to travel in 2020.

Portland, Maine, made Fodor’s Go List 2020, which named 52 top travel destinations worldwide in the upcoming year. The locales are organized by region, and nine are located in the U.S. and Canada. Portland is the only New England destination on the list.

“Portland has been experiencing a food renaissance in recent years, one that was wholeheartedly affirmed when Bon Appétit named this tiny city its 2018 Restaurant City of the Year,” Fodor’s wrote. “Since then, the culinary scene has exploded, and so too has the city’s popularity.”

Fodor’s points to Portland’s “bursting brewery scene,” art galleries, boutiques, cruises, and museums, calling the Portland Art Museum “a must to see amazing seascapes and landscapes by great American painters like Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and Edward Hopper.”

Fodor’s insider tip: Check out Casco Bay Line’s Mailboat Run, which takes mail and passengers up the coast to Little Diamond, Great Diamond, Long, Cliff, and Chebeague Islands.
