The Wall Street Journal revealed the best and worst U.S. airports of 2019 in a report released Wednesday. Logan ranked No. 15 among the nation’s 20 largest airports. Logan ranked 42.78 out of 100 overall, but snagged the best score in the maximum walking distance category and the second-best score in the TSA wait time category among large airports.

The No. 1 large airport in the country is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to the publication, with an overall score of 72.22 out of 100.

The publication ranked the airports using five measures of reliability (on-time arrivals, percentage of flights canceled, average arrival delay, aircraft taxi-out times, TSA wait times), five measures of value (average domestic fare, largest airline’s market share, cheapest on-site parking, rental car taxes and fees, average UberX fare to convention center), and five measures of convenience (an “extensive” WSJ survey of airports completed by more than 2,500 subscribers, nonstop cities served, Wi-Fi speed, the longest walk from the curb to the farthest gate, Yelp restaurant ratings).

Logan reigned supreme among large airports when it comes to commuting from curb to farthest gate, ranking No. 1 with a distance of 1,320 feet. Travelers at Minneapolis-St. Paul International have the farthest walk at 4,400 feet, according to the publication. For this category, airports supplied the distance of the longest possible walk from the curb of the terminal to the farthest gate, including the use of moving walkways, escalators, trains, and trams.

Logan also shined in the TSA wait time category, where it ranked No. 2 among large airports. Logan’s 4 minute and 15 second wait time was beat out only by Chicago O’Hare International Airport’s 3 minute and 13 second wait time. For this category, the TSA provided the average wait in standard lines, excluding PreCheck lines, during June 2019.

Logan’s lowest-scoring category? On-site parking, where it ranked second to last among large airports. The airport’s $29 cost was beat out only by Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s $32. Logan also ranked 18th in the following categories: on-time arrival, car-rental taxes, and nonstop destinations.

As for reader satisfaction, Logan ranked 12th among the 20 large airports.

“It says something about the state of airports in the U.S. that the highest WSJ reader score was only a B, with Detroit Metro’s score the highest among large airports.” the publication wrote. “Six got C grades or lower. The average GPA: C+.”

A reader offered the following tip about Logan: “Use the free airport buses to get to the T (subway) or ferry, and use those to get in and out of the city center — very quick and easy.”

Another offered this tip: “If you’re taking an Uber or Lyft from the airport — reserve as soon as your plane lands.”

The best midsize airport is Tampa International Airport, according to the report.
