PlayStation Is 25: Celebrating The Console That Started Sony’s Rise To Gaming Power

It’s the 25th anniversary of the Sony PlayStation, the upstart debutant that went on to dominate the console market and prove both experts and critics wrong.

I wonder what it was like for some gamers in the past that started gaming on a Nes, SNES, sega genesis with only 2d games and then got a playstation which was the renaissance of gaming and had only 3d games . The Ultra Nes came 2 years after the ps1 and only managed to release a handful of compelling titles for its generation but the ps1 had a lot of good games. Its amazing how the ps1 entered an industry that Nintendo ruled and was able to outclass Nintendo and beat them in the home console space. It's been the same for the past 25 years of sony releasing a good console with the most quality exclusive titles for the playstation and defeating the competition

I'm not the biggest Nintendo fan in fact I only like some of the IP's but I'm forever grateful to them. If it was not for them there would be no PlayStation as we know it.

Majority of gamers were once Nintendo fans because most gamers started gaming on a Nintendo platform. I started gaming on a gamecube then I got a wii , xbox 360 , wii u then a switch. Atari made Nintendo possible which made playstation. Nintendo made a lot of things that are standard in gaming now possible.

I am not sure about most gamers starting on Nintendo. Many did. You could certainly make that assumption for gamers who are 35-45 years old as the NES was so big... but for many many people in their 30s the Genesis or Playstation was their first console depending on how far into their 30s youre talking. My very first console was a Master system but I had already started gaming on my friends 2600, 5200 and NES. Not long after I had my SMS I got an NES and my friend got a Genesis which was a big deal. In my childhood here in the US many people who were born in the mid 80s started on Sega or Sony platforms, especially if youre talking about their first console.

What I will say is many many CASUAL gamers, girls especially seemed more likely to get a nintendo handheld as their first/primary way of gaming as not everyone has much access to the TV and as the parents of that generation were aware of how it takes up the TV from them doing so themselves as kids... it was a no brainer to give their own child a handheld. My daughter (Shes finishing highschool now) had access to but never played other consoles, but the first game system of her own was the DS. She didnt really keep the gaming hobby though.

Im that generation. But I was also a PC gamer. We were aware of 3d graphics long long before they hit
the home console. The playstation made it mainstream but the arcades did it first and everyone who was seriously aware of gaming knew about virtua fighter.

I will say also that this is going to sound weird but we had seen plenty of 3d graphics elsewhere, in cutscenes, movies, effects that mimick 3d like isometric graphics, or games like Ballz, Mode 7 effects and the like. So it wasnt like 3d came out of nowhere (it isnt like VR where you dont know it until you try it). I was gaming on PC and had 3d games long before the playstation released. Not all were quite like what you saw later on playstation but if youre talking about first person shooters and stuff like that we had those, and plenty of isometric 3d games that mimicked the look...

This is going to sound weird too ....but even the Atari had 3d games really. As did other consoles by playing graphical
tricks... .3d dungeons in Phantasy Star for example. At the time the average gamer was not technical so the "purity" of how "Real time" the graphics were wasnt really a concern. The Playstation, what it did was introduce cheap real time 3d games on an easy to develop for platform to the general public under a KNOWN AND TRUSTED BRAND as Sony was the most prestigious electronics company for the average person as nearly nobody knew who Marantz or Nakamichi was outside the audio world, and they werent making games systems, Sony meant graphics sony meant TV, so people loved that.

In terms of impact on the industry, the original PlayStation was the biggest I have ever seen in the history of home video game consoles. It turned what was a relatively small hobby mostly reserved for children into a worldwide acceptable past time for anyone of any age and background.

It was a cultural revolution for video games.

These seems like one of the best options for use with a PS5, high quality sound and design. However, you will likely need a dongle for use with many of your bluetooth devices such as an iPhone as it requires a LE signal.

The only purpose I could see me buying them is that they would be more comfortable to wear with PSVR2 compared to their Pulse/Pulse Elite over the head/over the ear cup headphones.

Babadook76h ago

Thats why I want them. Lower weight is a big plus for VR.

The use of “stellar” in the title made my dyslexic brain think there was a stellar blade exclusive limited edition or something.

Their newer giga cart tech should make for even bigger games coming to the platform. I'm hoping for a Resident Evil collection with the first 3 games.
