OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - A Louisiana woman who was five months pregnant was fatally shot while struggling over a gun with her boyfriend, according to police.

The woman was at her boyfriend’s house in Opelousas on Saturday night when she, her boyfriend, Maleke Guillory, and another woman got into an argument outside, Opelousas Police Department spokesman Maj. Mark Guidry told news outlets.

The victim retrieved a handgun from the home, and it went off as Guillory tried to take it from her, police said.

She was struck in the shoulder area and taken to a hospital, where she later died. Police Chief Martin McLendon identified the woman as Tyana Thomas.

Guillory was charged with two counts of negligent homicide. It was unclear whether he had an attorney who could comment for him.
