These New England schools offer the best value, according to Money magazine
A list of 727 colleges and universities includes 83 New England schools.
How’s this for an obvious statement? College can be extremely expensive. “College is a great investment—if you choose the right school,” Money magazine wrote in its “Best Colleges in America” report, which lists “the country’s top values.” Of 727 colleges and universities on the 2018 edition of the list, published Monday, New England schools were well-represented, with 83 schools in the region making the list. Eighteen of those were in the top 100.MIT nabbed the sixth spot on the list. The school placed behind Princeton University which was in the No. 1 position for the third year in a row, followed by University of California, San Diego at No. 2, the University of California, Irvine at No. 3, the University of California, Los Angeles at No. 4, and Stanford University at No. 5.Yale and Harvard universities were also among the top 20 schools, at No. 15 and No. 16, respectively. The rankings were determined by analyzing tuition costs, family borrowing, each college’s support of low-income students, alumni earnings, and more than 20 other factors. In order to even be considered, colleges had to meet parameters like having more than 500 students, having “sufficient, reliable” data, not being financially distressed, and having at least a certain graduation rate.“This eliminated some colleges that may be good values, but might be facing temporary financial difficulties or be too small for us to evaluate. But it left us with a robust universe of more than 700 colleges,” Money wrote in its explanation of the methodology. “In our view, even the lowest-ranked of the schools on our list demonstrate that they provide at least some value for your tuition dollars.”Here is how all of the New England institutions ranked, according to Money:
