Xbox Series X thermal and power analysis: how efficient is next-gen?

Xbox Series X claims to be the most powerful next-gen console - but how much power does it draw and is there any merit to the reports of extreme heat generation?

Marvelous job from Digital Foundry and MS. I really appreciate a work well done.

Let's just gloss over 62 degrees Celsius on a current gen workload... Not to mention this will go into tv cabinets.

Christopher1283d ago (Edited 1283d ago )

CPUs are fine up to about 75 degrees Celsius. PCs run this hot regularly.

Bladesfist1283d ago

It's way higher than that on a lot of new CPUs, AMD states the max safe operating temperature of the 3900x is 95C

blacktiger1283d ago

PC dont go inside a cabinet either way, Xbox SX will not be Xbox One it will be the greatest competition. And oh yea Bethesday, should've been something better

I_am_Batman1283d ago

Like Bladefist said maximum operating temperature is ~90°C on Zen 2 CPUs. Intel goes even higher. Those are core temperatures and as far as I've seen nobody even measured the SoC package temperature of the Xbox Series X. What I've seen so far are external case temperatures and exhaust temperatures which don't really tell us all that much to be honest.

hulk_bash19871283d ago

As long as you give the console enough room to properly vent the heat, I dont see an issue.

itsmebryan1283d ago

@hulk
It's only a issue if you are nitpicking trying to make an issue. Smj

Software_Lover1283d ago

What temp is your xbone/ps4 putting out?

Ask me and Im going to tell you the truth ..... I don’t know and don’t care, my games are playing!

yomfweeee1283d ago

The guy admitted this is the hottest he's ever seen from a console. I'm not understanding why anyone thinks this is debunking the rumors. This confirms the reports. Stop comparing it to PC. Compare it to consoles.

RaidenBlack1283d ago

Some android phones when gaming have their surfaces reach and even exceed 60 C.
Don't exaggerate. Your existing consoles have been spewing out heat nearly in the same ballpark for quite a while now. Its the top ward exhaust that has caught many's attention. Since normally prior console have traditionally had their heat vented rearward and went unnoticed (same applies for PS5 too).

Christopher1283d ago (Edited 1283d ago )

This isn't debunking anything, just showing facts.

Fact 1, it runs cool enough for the CPU to not be affected.

Fact 2, it outputs enough heat to prove it is moving heat away from the board rather than building up internally.

InUrFoxHole1283d ago

Lol you watched all the way to that point and all you took away was that?

Kiwi661283d ago

So what will you say if it turns out that the PS5 runs hotter?

DJStotty1283d ago

These are also the most powerful consoles to date, so chances are the thermals are going to be the highest.

Zeref1283d ago

That's weird cuz the PS4 pro runs hotter...

62..hm. 69 is the target. :D

Im sure Davie504 would approve.

(Seems a whooooosh)

Optimized Gears 5 4k60/120 using RDNA 2 features is hardly a current gen workload. Also PS4 Pro and One X were both measured by Digital Foundry @ 67c degrees at there hottest. Don't know why Richard forgot that. Here's links to both measurements by them.

DJStotty1283d ago

@Killa78

Mine will not be going in a cabinet, it will look good enough stationed alongside the TV.

I'm not concerned about the thermals, if you have a PC, go into BIOS and check the CPU temps on a PC to compare.

itsmebryan1283d ago

@Killa
What is the temp of the PS5 reported by independent reviewers? Just so we have a comparison.

Fallout 4 is now available on next-gen consoles, but PS Plus users might be left disappointed

Probably won't happen for PS+ since Sony makes a clear distinction between a PS4 game and a PS5 game, unlike PC and Xbox where it is not a specific device game (It's now always an Xbox game).

So to make the PS5 game of fallout 4 available. Bethesda would need to renegotiate the complete deal with Sony.
hence why there's often only the PS4 version of the game available on PS+.

Let's hope Bethesda and Sony can arrive to term quickly.

I think a hard copy should be relatively cheap at this point.
